It’s time to show the environment some love. Today’s headlines are downright depressing: there are floating islands of garbage in the ocean, glitter is now considered a pollutant, and America is facing a recycling crisis.
Don’t despair! Independent retailers can make little adjustments that add up to big positive changes for the environment. Just in time for Earth Day, here are six simple steps you can take to make your store more environmentally friendly.
Install Hand Dryers
Ditch the paper towels and install hand dryers in your restrooms. Research shows that even recycled paper towels generate more electricity and waste than hand dryers. Not only will you help the environment, but you’ll also save time by not having to empty trash receptacles as often, and you’ll save money by not having to restock paper towels regularly.
Eliminate Plastic Bags
Swap plastic bags for paper sacks and offer a discount for customers who decline bags altogether or bring their own reusable bags with them. You can also sell reusable bags with your company’s logo printed on them. You’ll reduce unnecessary waste and get some “free” advertising - a win/win!
Offer Electronic Receipts
Most paper receipts cannot be recycled, and some receipts contain chemicals that are linked to cancer and other diseases. You likely already offer digital coupons - so take it a step further and offer digital receipts too. You can set up your point of sale (POS) system to offer shoppers the option of choosing a digital receipt rather than a printed one. And, if possible, choose BPA Free receipt paper.
Minimize Display Packaging
Rather than using extra packaging or decor to display items on shelves, let your products shine on their own. When possible, choose resale products that minimize packaging, or use recyclable paper packaging. Choosing the right retail store shelving and wire baskets can help maximize your display design so your customers see products without excess packaging or decor.
When possible, buy from local wholesalers, artisans, and businesses. You’ll save on shipping and packaging costs, and you’ll be investing in your local economy.
Choose Well-Made Materials
One of the simplest ways to make a positive impact is to choose long-lasting materials when designing your retail store. Wood and metal are excellent eco-friendly options that can also offer an environmentally conscious tone to your store’s design.
