As the weather warms up, it seems it’s easier to see the clutter and cobwebs that hid so easily during the winter months. Spring has arrived, and with it comes spring cleaning!
Here at Handy Store Fixtures, we like to look for the silver lining behind every cloud. The coronavirus outbreak has many businesses switching their services to curbside pickup and delivery only. And the businesses that are open may have shortened hours in place. This means companies have an opportunity to do a deep clean with fewer daily interruptions.
In this article, we’ve created the ultimate spring cleaning checklist. Tackle one task or area at a time, and watch as your store transforms!
Clear Out Old Inventory
If you’re holding on to inventory that hasn’t sold in the past six months, it’s time to let it go. Toss any dated food items, and donate clothing or other inventory that can be repurposed.
Organize the Stockroom
An organized stockroom can increase efficiency and boost loss prevention strategies. Toss broken or outdated items, and then create a space for all regular inventory. If needed, set aside a section for a holiday or specialty inventory.
The CDC already has guidelines in place for sanitizing stores. Take it a step further and clean anything that is covered in dust - lamp shades, light bulbs, ceiling corners. You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to keep the store clean when everything is property dusted!
Vacuum or Sweep Everything
Yes, everything - including your office or that tiny space in the corner that is always overlooked. Although you may not notice it, rest assured that customers do - so clean it up and make it shine again.
Update Window Dressings
Nothing is more unpleasant for shoppers than seeing dust, dirt, and dead flies in a store window display. Wash windows inside and out, and thoroughly clean the display. This is also a great time to update window advertisements and displays, and refresh signage.
Touch Up Paint
Stop staring at that peeling paint and fix it up. Check your stockroom for leftovers from the last paint job, or choose a new color and give the entire store a fresh coat of paint.
Organize Counter Drawers
It’s easy for counter drawers and checkout areas to become cluttered. Go through counter drawers and remove any trash, old paper, or unnecessary items. Grab some drawer organizers if needed.
Declutter Your Desk
Don’t stop with the checkout counter! Head back to your office and clean off that desk. While you’re in there, review and clean out old files and paperwork. Be sure to properly dispose of any sensitive information, such as addresses and identifying information for former employees.
